• This large, stocky, black-coated dog overheats quickly; give a cool, shaded indoor area, water at all times and avoid strenuous activity during hot midday hours.
• Its short coat is easy to keep — brush once or twice weekly, wipe after walks and check the skin for sores or parasites.
• Joint problems show as limping or difficulty rising; heart problems as coughing, fainting or tiring easily — have both checked by a vet early.
