Chapter 5: Mats, hairballs and everyday coat problems

Cats in humid weather shed through the year, so tangles appear faster than expected. Check the armpits, behind the ears and the belly where mats form first, and work them out gently with your fingers before using a comb. Mats left alone pull on the skin and can cause sores. Hairballs are normal occasionally, but if your cat brings one up many times a week, eats less or strains, it is time to see a clinic. Regular brushing cuts down both problems.
