Chapter 2: First-week routine: food, water, litter or walks

Cats and dogs thrive on predictability. Feed your pet at the same times each day with a balanced diet suited to their age and size. Sudden food changes can upset the stomach, so if you ever need to switch brands, mix the new food with the old over several days. Fresh water should be available at all times, and litter boxes should be scooped daily.

Dogs need regular toileting breaks, ideally first thing in the morning, after meals and before bed. In Malaysian heat, early morning or evening walks are kinder on paws, since pavement can burn in strong midday sun. Start with short, calm outings and reward good behaviour rather than punishing mistakes — patience builds trust faster than scolding.

Set aside daily time for play and bonding. Cats enjoy wand toys and short bursts of activity, while dogs benefit from training sessions that reinforce basic cues like sit and stay. Keep the routine steady for the whole first week, and watch how your pet responds — appetite, energy and toileting habits are your quickest clues that something needs adjusting.
