Chapter 10: Portion Sizing — How Much to Feed

Start with your pet's current weight, body condition and life stage, then calculate a daily calorie target — your vet can do this accurately, especially for weight loss or growth. Fresh food contains water, so gram-for-gram it is less calorie-dense than kibble; do not simply match the old scoop size. Weigh food on a kitchen scale rather than estimating by eye, and divide the daily amount into two meals. Monitor body condition weekly: ribs should be easy to feel but not sharply visible, and there should be a waist from above. Adjust portions gradually based on condition, not appetite. Treats and toppers count toward the daily total — cap them. In Malaysia's heat, active pets may drink more but eat less during hot spells, so watch intake. Puppies and kittens need more frequent, carefully balanced meals. Recheck portions as your pet ages or activity changes, and keep a simple feeding log.
