Chapter 2: What Is Pet Insurance?
Pet insurance is a reimbursement product: you pay the vet, then claim back eligible costs according to your policy. It is not a savings account and does not guarantee payout. In Malaysia, pet insurance is offered by selected insurers and increasingly through pet retailers, clinics and digital platforms, so availability and terms differ from human medical insurance. Policies usually define the insured pet by age, breed and microchip or identification, and set limits per condition, per year or per lifetime. Pre-existing conditions are commonly excluded, and cover often starts after a waiting period. Because the Malaysian market is small, read the product disclosure sheet carefully and confirm the insurer's panel of veterinary clinics, or whether non-panel clinics are claimable. Insurance complements, but never replaces, routine preventive care and an emergency fund.
