Chapter 4: Key Policy Terms to Check

Before buying, examine the fine print. Look at the waiting period, which may run from days for accidents to weeks or months for illness and longer for orthopaedic conditions. Check the definition of pre-existing conditions, because a single recorded consultation for vomiting or skin rash can later be treated as excluded. Review annual and lifetime limits, per-condition sub-limits, co-insurance percentages and deductibles. Confirm the age at which cover starts and the renewal age limit, since many policies stop renewing older pets. Check whether premiums rise with age or claims history. Verify the claims window, usually a set number of days after treatment, and the required documents. Note exclusions such as pregnancy, elective procedures, grooming, behavioural therapy and preventive care. Finally, confirm whether your regular vet in your town or city is on the panel, since travelling far for a panel clinic defeats the purpose.
