Chapter 10: Dosing and Safety: Getting It Wrong Is Dangerous

Supplement safety hinges on correct dosing and product quality. Never guess doses from human labels, and never assume more is better. Some nutrients interact with medications, and certain human supplements contain ingredients toxic to pets, including xylitol, caffeine, and some herbal extracts. In Malaysia, imported products may lack clear labelling; choose products with named ingredients, clear dosing, and a manufacturer contact. Store supplements away from heat and humidity, which degrade many nutrients quickly. Watch for warning signs after starting anything new: vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, or skin reactions. Keep all supplements out of reach, as pets will eat chewables left on counters. If you suspect an overdose, contact your veterinarian immediately. Record what you give, how much, and when, so your vet can help quickly if problems arise.
