Chapter 4: Fish Oil Omega-3: Skin, Joints and Heart
Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) are among the most evidence-supported supplements for pets, helping with itchy skin, joint comfort, and some heart and kidney conditions under veterinary care. In Malaysia's humid climate, many dogs and cats have persistent skin irritation, and omega-3 can support the skin barrier alongside proper parasite control and diet. Quality matters: fish oil oxidises quickly in heat, so choose products stored cool, check expiry dates, and keep bottles sealed in the fridge after opening. Rancid oil smells sharp and should be discarded. Plant-based ALA sources are poorly converted by cats and dogs, so marine oil is preferred. Doses vary by condition and body weight, and high doses can affect clotting, so confirm the amount with your vet before starting, especially before surgery.
