Chapter 6: Probiotics for Gut Health
Probiotics can help during and after diarrhoea, antibiotic treatment, and stressful events like boarding or moving home. In Malaysia's heat, probiotic products are vulnerable: live cultures degrade quickly if stored warm, so check storage instructions and expiry dates carefully, and prefer products that specify strain and CFU count. Not all probiotics are equal; strain matters, and evidence varies by condition. For pets with chronic vomiting, weight loss, or bloody diarrhoea, probiotics are not a substitute for veterinary investigation, as parasites and infections are common here. Plain, unsweetened local yoghurt is sometimes suggested for dogs, but lactose tolerance varies and it is not a reliable probiotic source. Always introduce slowly, watch for worsening signs, and stop if your pet reacts poorly. Ask your vet which product suits your pet's specific situation.
