Chapter 2: Beds, carriers and travel safety

A good bed gives your pet a safe, comfortable place to rest, and it protects your furniture in the process. Look for a bed with a removable, washable cover, since our humidity means bedding can trap moisture and odours quickly. Raised or breathable designs help air circulate, and mats made from cool fabrics can help pets stay comfortable during warmer afternoons. Some pets prefer the security of a bolstered or enclosed bed, while others simply stretch out on a flat mat.

Carriers matter for more than just vet visits. Cats in particular should have a carrier they can get used to gradually, rather than one that only ever appears before an unpleasant trip. A sturdy carrier with good ventilation and a secure door keeps your pet safe during car journeys, whether you are heading across town or travelling between states. For dogs, a well-fitted harness or a secure crate in the car prevents them from roaming while you drive.

Travel safety extends beyond the vehicle. Keep identification on your pet at all times β€” a collar with a tag, and for cats, consider microchipping as a permanent backup. During long trips, plan for regular stops to offer water and let your pet relieve itself. Never leave a pet alone in a parked car, as temperatures inside can rise quickly even on a mild day.
