Chapter 3: Reading the Ingredient List — Avoiding Traps
Ingredient lists are read in descending order by weight, so the first few items tell you the most. Look for a named protein — chicken, fish, beef — rather than vague terms like "meat meal" or "animal derivatives". Watch for added sugar, syrups, artificial colours, and excessive salt, which are common in cheap treats and unnecessary for pets. "Natural" on packaging is a marketing word, not a guarantee. Check the guaranteed analysis for protein, fat, and fibre, and compare against your pet's needs. In Malaysia, look for labels in English or Bahasa Malaysia with a manufacturer name and address, and be cautious with repackaged treats sold without original packaging. Treats imported through unofficial channels may have passed through heat and humidity that degrade fats. If a label is unclear or missing, choose another product — or ask your vet for a recommendation.
