Chapter 6: Cat Treats — Winning Over the Feline
Cats are obligate carnivores, so treats should be meat-based and low in carbohydrate. Freeze-dried chicken or fish, small pieces of cooked plain meat, and commercial cat treats formulated for cats are good options. Avoid dog treats — they may lack taurine and other nutrients cats need. Many Malaysian cats are indoor-only, which means treats are a major source of extra calories; measure them and cut back the main meal accordingly. Use treats to build trust with shy cats and to reward gentle handling, nail trims, and carrier training. Never give milk, cheese, or sugary snacks, as many cats are lactose intolerant. Dried fish sold for human consumption can be extremely salty — offer only small amounts, if at all. If your cat stops eating or loses weight, see your vet promptly.
