Chapter 1: Reading a wet-food label: protein, moisture and additives

When you pick up a can, the first thing to check is the protein source. Look for a clearly named meat, fish or poultry listed as the primary ingredient—this tells you the food is built on real animal protein rather than fillers. The moisture content, usually shown as a percentage, indicates how much water is in the product; wet foods typically contain around 70‑80 % moisture, which helps keep your cat hydrated.

Additives are another key area. Look for essential vitamins and minerals such as taurine, omega‑3 and omega‑6 fatty acids, and vitamin E, which support heart, eye and skin health. Avoid products that list artificial colours, excessive salt, or unnamed by‑products, as these can be hard to digest and may cause health issues over time.
