Chapter 2: Portion size, transition and storage in the tropics
Portion size depends on your cat’s age, weight and activity level. A common guideline is to feed about 20‑25 kilocalories per kilogram of body weight per day, split into two or three meals. Use a kitchen scale or a measuring cup to stay consistent; overfeeding can lead to obesity, which is a growing concern for indoor cats.
Transitioning from dry to wet food (or vice versa) should be gradual to avoid stomach upset. Over a period of seven to ten days, mix a small amount of the new food with the current diet, increasing the proportion of the new food each day. Watch for changes in stool, appetite or energy, and adjust the pace if needed.
- Practical check: note one change you can make this week.
- Local context: adapt the advice to your home, climate and routine in Malaysia.
