Chapter 9: Switching litters safely

Cats are particular about texture, so a sudden swap can make them avoid the box entirely. Mix the new litter into the old one, starting with about a quarter new and raising that share over seven to ten days. Keep the box, location, and cleaning routine unchanged while you switch, so only one thing differs at a time. If your cat still refuses, return to the previous litter and try again more slowly, perhaps with a different brand or particle size.
