Chapter 8: How to Choose a Brand — Ingredients and Needs

Start with your pet, not the shelf: species, age, size, activity, body condition, and any diagnosed condition. Then read the label. Look for a named animal protein first, a clear life-stage statement, and a nutritional adequacy claim (for example, "complete and balanced for adult maintenance"). Check the guaranteed analysis for protein, fat, and fibre, and compare on a dry-matter basis if you are comparing wet and dry. Consider availability: a food you can restock reliably in your area beats a premium brand that runs out for months. Factor in our climate — smaller bags stay fresher. Finally, ask your vet to sanity-check your shortlist, especially for puppies, kittens, seniors, and pets with health issues. A good brand is one your pet does well on, you can afford consistently, and your vet is comfortable with.
