Chapter 5: Transitioning from Kibble to Fresh Food

Switch gradually over seven to ten days to avoid digestive upset. Start with mostly old food and a small spoon of fresh, increasing the fresh proportion every couple of days while reducing kibble. Watch stools: loose motion means slow down. Some pets gulp fresh food eagerly and vomit; offer smaller, more frequent meals at first. Keep the transition period boring — don't introduce new treats or supplements simultaneously, so you can tell what caused any problem. Cats are often more resistant than dogs; try warming the food slightly and offering it in a quiet spot. In Malaysian apartments, feeding times may clash with work schedules, so pick two consistent slots. If your pet has a health condition, is pregnant, or is a growing puppy or kitten, plan the transition with your vet. Stop and seek advice if you see persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy or refusal to eat for more than a day.
