Chapter 6: Fresh Food Brands — What to Look For
The Malaysian fresh and gently cooked pet food market is expanding, with chilled and frozen options appearing in pet specialty shops and online. Rather than chasing brand names, judge any product on fundamentals. Look for a stated "complete and balanced" claim, ideally meeting recognised nutritional standards, and a clear statement of who formulates it — a qualified animal nutritionist is a good sign. Check the ingredient list for named meats and organs, not vague "meat by-products". Confirm the cold chain: chilled or frozen food must stay cold from shop to your freezer, which matters greatly in our climate and during festive delivery delays. Check manufacturing and expiry dates, and whether the pack suits your pet's life stage. Local brands using poultry and fish can be practical and fresh, but ask for nutritional documentation. Your vet can help you compare products; avoid buying large quantities of an untried food before your pet has accepted it.
