Chapter 6: Insurance Versus Self-Insuring
Insurance is not the only way to prepare. Self-insuring means setting aside a fixed amount monthly into a dedicated emergency fund, which you control and can use for anything, including excluded conditions. The trade-off is time: building a fund large enough for major surgery takes years, and a serious illness in the first year could exhaust it. Insurance transfers large, unpredictable risks but costs money even if unused, and excludes pre-existing conditions. Many Malaysian owners use a hybrid approach: a modest insurance policy for accidents and surgery, plus a growing savings buffer for consultations, vaccinations and excluded items. Whichever route you choose, keep records of every veterinary visit, because documentation supports future claims and helps your vet track your pet's health. Review your plan yearly, especially when premiums change or your pet enters its senior years.
