Chapter 7: When to Buy and How to Prepare

The best time to insure is when your pet is young and healthy, because pre-existing conditions are excluded and premiums are lower. Puppies and kittens can often be enrolled after their initial vaccination course, subject to the policy's minimum age. Before applying, gather your pet's vaccination record, microchip details, recent health check notes and any prior treatment history. Be honest about past illnesses, since non-disclosure can void a claim. If your pet is already older or has a chronic condition, insurance may still help with unrelated new conditions, but read exclusions carefully. Avoid buying in a rush during an emergency, because waiting periods mean cover will not apply immediately. Instead, plan at adoption or purchase, then revisit cover as your pet ages. Keep digital copies of all documents, and set a calendar reminder for renewal so you never face a lapse in cover.
