Chapter 3: Mosquitoes and Parasites — Heartworm and Fleas
Malaysia's warmth means mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks breed all year. Heartworm, spread by mosquitoes, is a serious and potentially fatal disease in dogs and also affects cats; monthly preventive medication is the standard safeguard, prescribed by your vet. Fleas thrive in humid homes and on pets that visit grass or meet other animals; itching, hair loss, and flea dirt are warning signs. Ticks can carry disease and are common after walks in long grass or jungle trails. Use vet-recommended preventives rather than guessing — products available locally vary, and some dog products are toxic to cats. Check your pet's coat weekly, wash bedding in hot water, and keep grass short. If you travel to rural areas or East Malaysia, ask your vet about extra protection.
