Chapter 4: Wet Season and Humidity — Skin and Fungal Problems

When humidity climbs and rain keeps pets indoors, skin problems flare. Fungal infections (ringworm, Malassezia) and bacterial dermatitis love warm, damp skin folds — under the ears, in armpits, between toes, and in skin folds of flat-faced breeds. Signs include redness, itching, greasy or scaly patches, hair loss, and a musty smell. Dry your pet thoroughly after walks in the rain or after bathing; a damp coat left to air-dry is an invitation for microbes. Keep bedding dry and wash it often. Avoid over-bathing, which strips protective oils — use pet-safe shampoo and ask your vet how often is right for your pet. If you see spreading lesions or persistent scratching, see a vet rather than trying home remedies; some skin conditions need prescription treatment.
