Chapter 8: Climate comfort: cooling mats, fans and shade

Heat builds up quickly in terraced houses and apartments, so look for cooling mats with pressure-activated gel or simple mesh beds that allow airflow underneath. Position beds away from window glass that bakes under afternoon sun, and never leave carriers parked in direct light.

For pets that spend time outdoors, a shaded run with good cross-ventilation matters more than a roof alone. Towel-drying after a sudden downpour and a gentle fan on low speed help prevent heat stress. Always provide fresh cool water throughout the day.
