Chapter 5: Training a new cat

When you bring a kitten or a new adult cat home, confine it to one room with the litter box for the first few days. This helps the cat learn where the box is without getting lost in a large house or condo. Gently place the cat in the box after meals, after naps, and after play, and praise it when it uses the box. Never punish accidents; clean them with an enzyme-based cleaner so the lingering smell does not draw the cat back.
